SPIRITUAL MUSIC FOR A SECULAR AGE
John Tavener's Akathist of Thanksgiving
The music of John Tavener has gained immense popularity in the last few
years, a development which no one could have foreseen a decade ago, but
which - in retrospect - was perhaps inevitable. With such works as "The
Protecting Veil" and now "Akathist of Thanksgiving," this fifty-year-old
English composer of sacred music has struck a responsive chord for
listeners of the most varied musical backgrounds and tastes, reaching
far beyond the usual audience for "classical" music. Yet Tavener himself
would deny that his intention is to be popular. In fact, he maintains
that there is a basic contradiction between the spirit of his music and
the times in which we live: "I'm driven by a force

By David Demsey and Ronald Prather
Bio-Bibliographies in Music, No. 45
1993. 320 pages. 0-313-27820-2. $55.00
One of the few American composers to earn an international
reputation in both "classical" and popular music, Alec Wilder
(1907-1980) was a true innovator in every phase of composition he
pursued. His many hundreds of musical compositions, ranging from
chamber and orchestral music, to opera and ballet, theatre and film,
and art songs and popular songs, are documented here in an exhaustive
catalog of works. Included are detailed performance information and
cross references to recordings in a discography section and reviews

Vangelis The Artist
The musical talents of Vangelis first became obvious at the age of four.
His parents tried to encourage him to study with a professional teacher,
but he did not respond well to formal education as he was generally unwilling
to follow instructions.
Vangelis explains,
I have always felt that you should not borrow knowledge from others,
because personal experience and development are of utmost significance.
After leaving school he and some friends formed a group called Formynx.
In the early 60s this band packed Greek stadiums with thousands of music
hungry fans. Vangelis was virually the first artist that brought pop
music to his home country. Formynx was soon Greeces most popular musical
group.
During the Greek upheaval in 1968 Vangelis moved

Wordsworth and the Tao Te Ching, as well as his own fertile

Indian Classical Music traces its roots to ancient times. Starting
with Vedic chants around the 4 th millennium BC, Indian Music has
evolved and adapted to the times.
Classical Indian music is melodic in nature. Vedic chants were
recited on a scale of three swaras (notes)--- anudatta
(low), svarita (middle) and udatta (high) swaras.
The scale evolved to five and to the current system of seven swaras.
Flats or sharps of five of the seven led to a total of twelve aurally
distinguishable notes. However, the entire scale can be divided into
twenty two srutis ( Sanskrit sru ---to hear),
theoretically slightly unequal, but for all practical purposes equal
micro tonal intervals, each roughly equal to a quarter tone.

List 1 - Early Keyboard Music
(Revision 2, 8/5/92)
Introduction -
This list includes music written during the period from the late sixteenth
century through the middle of the eighteenth century. The majority of the
music from this time span is considered to be Baroque (roughly 1600-1750)
but music from the late Renaissance that preceded the Baroque period, as
well as the Gallant and Rococo styles which grew beyond the High Baroque
style, is also included in this list. The term "keyboard music" as applied
here refers to music playable by one or two performers and may include
music played on any type of keyboard instrument (i.e., harpsichord, organ,
fortepiano or clavichord).

Matthew Ross Davis
Hi! and welcome...
first a bit about me (Matt Davis): I am currently a graduate student studying Instructional Technology in Music Education at Virginia Tech. My area of study is how
multimedia and Instructional Systems Design can be applied to Music Education in secondary and higher education.
I play classical guitar, sing, compose, and play jazz guitar
in a band me, Jason Price and a few others got together, currently called Craque, though that could change.
Our influences are stuff like Mingus, John Zorn & Naked City, Miles, Tom
Waits, etc., and as much original stuff as we can handle without falling over.
You can reach me by email a couple of ways:

SF-references-in-music List
Copyright Rich Kulawiec 1993, 1994.
This is the revised SF-in-music list. It isn't comprehensive, but
it does try to cover rock, jazz, folk, classical and electronic music.
Most of the items listed here fall pretty well into these categories.
There is also a list of SF-based operas, which was assembled by
Evelyn C. Leeper and is reproduced here with permission. I've attempted
to list everybody who helped in the large (and growing) montage at the end.
SF can stand for whatever you'd like it to; science fiction, science fantasy,
speculative fiction, you pick it. My personal definition is rather broad,
which, coupled with the copious contributions of those of you on the
various networks, accounts for the length of this list.

Try Ali or Khan or Ravi or Shankar or Krishnan as a first search and see what format the database is in. Perhaps you might get an idea on what to search for. At present, this database contains mainly CDs of Hindustani Musicians. But please be patient. This database is still in development. This database eventually would be a collection of all Hindustani and Karnatic (or Carnatic) CDs available. Your feedback and input is highly valued and is appreciated. : Defining the Groove of the Future
D'Cückoo
is a techno-artist collective whose work knows no bounds,
geographically and technologically.
They invented and built electronic instruments that trigger an enormous
range of digital sound and music samples.
With a solid foundation in computer and synthesizer programming,
euro-western classical theory, zimbabwean percussion and
japanese drumming, these four women amalgamate styles as diverse as
shona and taiko, funk and cyberpunk.
D'Cückoo's
music and instrumental-vocal performances are exotic,
innovative and surprising.
Their music is characterized by an engaging sonic depth and a
dynamic playing style.
It is straight from the heart ... yet their lyrics display the

Mark Sullivan
About Mark Sullivan
Mark Sullivan was
born in 1952 in Detroit. He began playing the guitar at age fourteen, and
started
writing songs almost immediately, in folk and rock styles. He got
interested in
jazz and classical music in college (the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor).
He
earned a BA in psychology and an MA in Library Science, also taking courses in
music theory, musicology, and composition. His principal composition
teacher was
George Cacioppo (a former member of the avant-garde ONCE group), who he studied
with for over two years privately.
While in Ann Arbor, Mark performed in a workshop orchestra under the
direction of
Karl Berger of the Creative Music Studio (1979), was a founding member of the
Sinewave Sessions
